About This Spot

Stepping into Stox Restaurant Bakery & Bar feels like slipping back through a time capsule filled with familiar scents and soft chatter. This longstanding Downey spot welcomes you with a warm, steady rhythm—a place where the pace slows just enough to savor not only your meal but also the moments between bites. The nostalgic hum of a classic diner mingles effortlessly with the clink of coffee cups and the murmur of friendly conversation, inviting you to settle in as if to visit an old friend.

There’s a comforting simplicity in the way the room is arranged: well-worn booths and a gleaming counter where locals gather for morning coffee and the daily ritual of breaking bread. Here, breakfast feels celebratory, marked by fluffy pancakes drizzled in homemade syrup or eggs served alongside perfectly crisp hashbrowns. Yet the menu extends beyond the morning hours, offering hearty dishes that echo familiar, home-style cooking—from steak and eggs to rich, creamy soups and fresh-from-the-oven pies that feel like sweet little rewards.

What makes Stox shine isn’t just its generous plates but its pulse as a true community hub. The friendly exchanges between staff and regulars, the quiet moments of reflection over a cup of orange juice, and the low-key joy of sharing mimosas with someone special all create an environment that’s as much about connection as it is about food. The sense of history here is palpable—every dish, every handshake seems to tell a story, carrying on a tradition of genuine care and attention that invites you to become part of it.

Whether you’re seeking a relaxed morning escape or a comforting midday meal, Stox offers a space that feels both familiar and quietly cherished. It’s a small sanctuary from the rush of modern life, where simple pleasures and genuine hospitality linger long after the last bite.

As advertised, best breakfast in town, and it truly was. A lovely old school diner. The food is prepared from scratch, nothing frozen, Evelyn said. And our server, Abel, made sure that everything was to our satisfaction.

Historic location with great homestyle atmosphere. Great selection of classic diner favorites and homemade desserts. We tried the Belgian waffle, veggie omelet and a raspberry cream cheese pie. Prices were a bit on the pricier side for diner fare, but everything was delicious and service was great.

Talk about going back in time! What a wonderful little spot this is. Feels like you're stepping into a Time portal into the '60s. Growing up in the '80s there were still a lot of places like this but not anymore. There's only a few and this is one of them. The food was excellent to service was great. I didn't want to leave. Oh and they have lottery at the front. I made 50 bucks on some scratchers so breakfast was on California lottery!
